Successful Underfloor Heating Project in Hataitai, Wellington

In the suburb of Hataitai, Wellington, Flow Plumbing & Heating successfully completed an extensive underfloor heating project for a spacious 700 square meter residence spread over three floors. System Design and Components

  • Hydronic Underfloor Heating: This system circulates warm water through pipes embedded beneath the floor surface, ensuring even heat distribution and eliminating cold spots.
  • Zoning with Manifolds: To optimize control and efficiency, the heating system was segmented into multiple zones, each regulated by its own thermostat  This design allows for precise temperature adjustments in different areas of the home, catering to varying heating needs and enhancing energy efficiency.
  • Heat Generation: The system’s heat was supplied by two Vaillant ecoTEC condensing boilers, each with a capacity of 37 kW. These high-efficiency boilers are renowned for their reliability and performance.
  • Weather Compensation Technology: To further enhance efficiency, the boilers were equipped with weather compensation controls. This technology adjusts the heating output based on external temperature changes, ensuring optimal energy use and consistent indoor comfort.
  • Domestic Hot Water Integration: In addition to space heating, the boilers were configured to supply domestic hot water, providing a comprehensive solution for the household’s heating and hot water requirements.

Challenges and Solutions

One of the biggest challenges encountered during the project was the multiple concrete pours on different sections of the build at different times. This complexity required careful coordination to ensure the underfloor heating system was installed seamlessly across all floors.

Solution:

  • Strategic Planning of Pipe Runs: The placement and routing of the heating pipes were meticulously planned to accommodate the staggered concrete pours, ensuring continuity and system efficiency.
  • Communication with the Lead Contractor: Regular discussions with the project’s lead contractor allowed for proactive adjustments in scheduling and installation, preventing any delays or misalignment in the heating system setup.

Outcome and Client Satisfaction

Upon completion, the underfloor heating system delivered consistent and efficient warmth throughout the 700 square meter home. The integration of advanced technologies, such as weather compensation, resulted in optimized energy usage and reduced operational costs. I would definitely recommend Flow Plumbing to anyone considering central heating. The whole process has been smooth and very professionally managed with no problems at any stage. The installation was done without any mess in the house and the finished job looks very nice and works perfectly. The components (boiler, radiators etc) are all very good quality. I am very pleased that we finally got gas central heating installed – I only wish we had done it years ago! Will be using Flow again in the future if we ever move house, but for now we wil just enjoy our toasty warm house and endless hot water this winter! I just had the system serviced after a year – there were no problems and they adjusted it to make it work even better!

Flow replaced a central heating boiler installed by the previous owner of our place. Firstly they were able to provide a quote within a day or so by sending them pictures of the current setup. Then they were available quickly to install and do some repair work to pipes etc. All pretty easy, and Chris who did the installation was real helpful in general, and in getting the wifi and app sorted for boiler control. No surprises on how good Flow are given their 4.9 overall rating.

We had a full system of 11 radiators, heatpump, hotwater cylinder, thermostat/hub installed in our house by Flow Plumbing and Heating. The results have been transformational. The house is now warm & cosy in every room and the heat generated by the radiators is a lot more “warming” than the pitiful output from the previous two heatpumps. I honestly don’t know why radiators are not more common in NZ like they are in other parts of the world. I was hugely impressed by the workmanship of the installer (Peter) and his apprentice.
