Successful Underfloor Heating Project in Hataitai, Wellington

In the suburb of Hataitai, Wellington, Flow Heating completed an extensive underfloor heating project for a 700 square metre residence spread over three floors.

The problem

The Hataitai home was a large, 700 square metre residence being built across three floors, with concrete poured in multiple separate stages at different times. Coordinating an underfloor heating system across staggered concrete pours, while still delivering consistent, zoned warmth and efficient hot water for a home of this scale, was the core challenge for the project.

Our recommendation

Flow Heating specified a hydronic underfloor heating system, circulating warm water through pipes embedded beneath the floor for even heat distribution and no cold spots. The design included:

  • Zoning with manifolds | the system was segmented into multiple zones, each with its own thermostat, allowing precise temperature control in different areas of the home.
  • Heat generation | two Vaillant ecoTEC condensing boilers, each rated at 37kW, supplied the system’s heat.
  • Weather compensation technology | the boilers were fitted with weather compensation controls, adjusting heating output to external temperature changes for consistent indoor comfort and efficient energy use.
  • Domestic hot water integration | the boilers were also configured to supply the home’s domestic hot water.

The installation

The biggest challenge during installation was the multiple concrete pours on different sections of the build at different times. Flow Heating addressed this by:

  • Strategic planning of pipe runs | the placement and routing of the heating pipes were carefully planned to accommodate the staggered concrete pours, keeping the system continuous and efficient.
  • Regular communication with the lead contractor | ongoing discussions allowed proactive adjustments to scheduling and installation, preventing delays or misalignment in the heating system setup.

The result

The finished underfloor heating system delivers consistent, efficient warmth throughout the 700 square metre home. The weather compensation technology optimised energy use and reduced running costs, and the homeowners reported high satisfaction with the system’s performance, comfort and seamless operation.

This project was completed in the Wellington suburb of Hataitai, on a large three-storey home. It shows how a plumbed, zoned underfloor system can heat a large multi-level Wellington property evenly, while managing the practical challenges of a staged build.

I would definitely recommend Flow Plumbing to anyone considering central heating. The whole process has been smooth and very professionally managed with no problems at any stage. The installation was done without any mess in the house and the finished job looks very nice and works perfectly. The components (boiler, radiators etc) are all very good quality. I am very pleased that we finally got gas central heating installed – I only wish we had done it years ago! Will be using Flow again in the future if we ever move house, but for now we wil just enjoy our toasty warm house and endless hot water this winter! I just had the system serviced after a year – there were no problems and they adjusted it to make it work even better!

Flow replaced a central heating boiler installed by the previous owner of our place. Firstly they were able to provide a quote within a day or so by sending them pictures of the current setup. Then they were available quickly to install and do some repair work to pipes etc. All pretty easy, and Chris who did the installation was real helpful in general, and in getting the wifi and app sorted for boiler control. We had a full system of 11 radiators, heatpump, hotwater cylinder, thermostat/hub installed in our house by Flow Plumbing and Heating. The results have been transformational. The house is now warm & cosy in every room and the heat generated by the radiators is a lot more “warming” than the pitiful output from the previous two heatpumps.
