What is underfloor heating?

With underfloor heating producing radiant heat, comfort tends to be felt sooner and at a lower temperature. Minimal air flow keeps the temperature comfortable and even everywhere in the room.

Healthier

Underfloor heating is a totally dust-free, allergen-free form of heating, making it ideal for medical conditions such as asthma.

Warmer

Radiator central and Underfloor Heating can warm up and cool down quickly, making it ideal for New Zealand’s seasonal temperatures. Heating a room with both radiant and convection creates a more comfortable temperature.

In a house with 2.7 m ceilings, a radiator heating system will cost around 20% less to operate than a ducted system. Homes with higher ceilings will see even greater cost savings of 30-40%.

FAQs

What fuel does underfloor heating run on?

An underfloor system can be heated by a boiler or air to water heat pump and the energy source is decided by the cheapest available fuel in your region e.g; natural gas, LPG, diesel or wood. The choice of a wood burning boiler (wetback on a large wood fire), however requires effort on your part to keep the wood fire burning constantly.

Does the diesel or gas travel through the floor?

No, the fuel is used to heat water which is then circulated through the floor.

Can I use the system to heat my hot water for showers or to heat my pool?

Yes, we have the ability to use the heat source for more than one job. The advanced control systems allow the boiler to start on demand for each duty and produce the right temperature water for each job.

How do I control my underfloor heating system to turn on and off?

We can supply a range of control options from programmable thermostats (which control the slab temperature) to the more advanced temperature compensated solutions which measure the outside temperature and pre-emptively modulate the system up and down.

Are there any types of floors not suitable with underfloor central heating?

Underfloor heating works best with a concrete floor structure due to its thermal mass. Wood is not a great insulator so we recommend radiator heating for houses with wooden floor structures.

Will the heated floor also heat my house?

Yes, the floor radiates heat upward into the room keeping the space at a comfortable temperature.

I would definitely recommend Flow Plumbing to anyone considering central heating. The whole process has been smooth and very professionally managed with no problems at any stage. The installation was done without any mess in the house and the finished job looks very nice and works perfectly. The components (boiler, radiators etc) are all very good quality. I am very pleased that we finally got gas central heating installed – I only wish we had done it years ago! Will be using Flow again in the future if we ever move house, but for now we wil just enjoy our toasty warm house and endless hot water this winter! I just had the system serviced after a year – there were no problems and they adjusted it to make it work even better!

Flow replaced a central heating boiler installed by the previous owner of our place. Firstly they were able to provide a quote within a day or so by sending them pictures of the current setup. Then they were available quickly to install and do some repair work to pipes etc. All pretty easy, and Chris who did the installation was real helpful in general, and in getting the wifi and app sorted for boiler control. We had a full system of 11 radiators, heatpump, hotwater cylinder, thermostat/hub installed in our house by Flow Plumbing and Heating. The results have been transformational. The house is now warm & cosy in every room and the heat generated by the radiators is a lot more “warming” than the pitiful output from the previous two heatpumps.
